Defining Success

I read a post the other day by my sweet friend, Amanda Hedgepeth, about defining what success means for you. Success for her is about putting her time with her adorable family first and using her business to build a life for them.

Her post really got me thinking about a lot of things – both as they relate to business and to life in general. Most importantly, it got me thinking about what success means to me. I used to think success meant getting lots of blog/Facebook followers, building this little business to a point where it could be my only source of income, using my photography to reach out to people, building up a community of past clients and fellow photographers, and serving my clients by loving on them and educating them and helping them through the wedding experience. I thought my success was dependent on me being a wedding photographer, and shooting the most gorgeous weddings and connecting with my clients on a personal level. Now I know, however, that my success is not based on any of that.

Amanda said in her post that when you’re defining personal success, you have to start from scratch, like really start from scratch. “Be strong, be smart, be determined and driven in this…start from scratch.”  So I sat, and I thought about my life. What makes me happy? What makes me proud? When do I feel like I’m doing the most good for the world? I told a friend about a year and a half ago that I didn’t feel like I was doing enough to be part of God’s Kingdom. She asked me at the time what that really meant and what being more involved would look like. At the time I had no idea, but now I know it all works back into this conversation.

I feel like I’m doing the most good when I’m with kids.

Some of my proudest memories are when I’m with kids; teaching them things like how to read or swim, playing with them in the park, or even just talking to them. I’ve always said little kids are my favorite because they have such a pure and excited view of the world! They think about things so different than adults do, and I love it!

So what does this have to do with success and photography? If you’ve been following along for a while, you’ve probably noticed the slow change from weddings every weekend to lots of kids and baby faces. With the start of the new job, I’m moving this little business to a more part-time basis, only shooting certain sessions, and shooting way less than I did last year. I still love photography, and I promise I’m not going anywhere!! I’m just learning that success to me is defined more in the faces of the kids in my life than in the images on the back of my camera.

For now, I want to leave you with these questions: What does your success look like? What makes you happiest? What makes you proud? Where do you want your life to go? Who do you want to surround yourself with? Start from scratch, define your success, and then make it happen, friends!! <3 WEBSITE: www.amanda-truth-photography.com // BLOG: www.amandatruthblog.com
