How to Prepare for Your Newborn Session

A few months ago, I took a job with a company called Bella Baby Photography, shooting newborn photos in the hospital the day after Baby is born. It is a great company to work for, and I’m sure I’ll go on about it more in the future, but the most important part about the job right now is that it has been absolutely fabulous in helping me to get back to shooting every day, and I have learned SO MUCH! Having anywhere between 2 – 6 different rooms (read: newborn photo sessions) in a day forces you to get a system in place and be on your game all day long! It also gives you an insane amount of opportunities to learn and practice what you know! Because I have learned so much, I thought it was time to share that knowledge with you by sharing some helpful tips for how to prepare for your in-home newborn session.

  1. The sooner, the better. We all know that babies change SO MUCH in their first year, but did you know how much they change even in their first week?! By day 8, babies are much less likely to be all squishy and cuddled in because by now they have learned how to STRETCH! If you can, try to schedule baby’s shoot in that first 7 days after birth.
  2. Timing is everything. Babies are most likely to be sleepy right after they’ve eaten and gone to the bathroom. This is the perfect time to schedule their session! They’ll be happy because they’re full and dry, and they’ll be so much more likely to go with the flow if they’re sleeping! If you’ve got a general idea of baby’s eating schedule, make sure to book your photo session about a half hour to 45 minutes after baby is done eating.
  3. Props are your BEST friend! Have a blanket that Grandma made? Or a teddy bear that was yours when you were a baby? Definitely incorporate those! They will mean so much more later! Plus having blankets, outfits, and stuffed animals is a great way to add variety and make your session completely your own.
  4. You look so much better than you think you do. I think this one needs repeating – Moms, you look so much better than you think you do! I can’t even tell you how many new moms tell me that they don’t want to be in the photos because they look bad. Momma, you just had a BABY! You just brought a human into the world! You. Are. A. ROCKSTAR! Listen to Dad when he tells you you’re beautiful, and remember that years from now, Baby will cherish these photos with you.
  5. Never be afraid to step in and be a parent. More important than any picture I could ever get is that little angel in front of my camera. Sometimes they get hungry, or wet themselves, or even just need some extra loving. My number one goal during a newborn session is to give Mom and Dad some time to relax, but you should never feel like you can’t step in and be a parent! Taking care of Baby and making sure s/he is happy and comfortable should always be the number one priority!
  6. Enjoy the moment. I know right now it feels like Baby will never learn to sleep through the night, and your clothes will constantly be covered in formula and spit up, but it’s so important to enjoy this time, because even though it doesn’t feel like it, I promise you, it will pass. That’s the whole reason you’re getting these photos taken, anyway – to preserve the moment!! So sit back, let me do all the hard work, and enjoy watching Baby’s personal paparazzi session 🙂
